Finished my fuel tank prep. Thanks to Eric T. for the tips.
1. First i had the inside of the tank cleaned at a local radiator shop. It looks perfectly clean on the inside so now I had to make it look new and factory delivered on the outside.
2. I started with 220g sand paper and got all the scratches and corrosion areas cleaned up.
3. Next I moved to 400g paper and did the same
4. Next I used the "gray" 3M scratch pads to remove the swirls and produce an even finish
5. Next I buffed the tank using 3M rubbing compound and a wool buffing wheel.
6. This resulted in a nice "mill" finish
last thing to do is to spray a clear coat of varnish for protection and then it will look factory new.

Looks great Don... Clean "mill finish" looks good and not polished or over-detailed (been there... done that).

OK, I finished the prep by spraying the tank with varnish as it was original.
I then installed as original.
